J.C. (John Carleton) Bicknell's (1871-1956?) life story is wrapped in mystery, including a decades-long feud with his brother during which they would do business with each other's companies, both based in Maine, but never meet or speak. At 7 years of age, Bicknell lost his right arm after falling out of a tree, but that near-death experience did not prevent him from spending many years in the 1920's and 1930's tramping through the wilds with heavy and cumberson photgraphic equipment to photograph Maine and New Hampshire's breathtaking vistas. The black and white photographs were then delicately hand- colored by artists back at his photograph company, Bicknell Mfg. Co., etablished in 1902 in Portland, Maine. He was also trained as an accountant.
The residue from Bicknell's life work was discovered in 2005 in the basement of Bicknell's son's home in Maine and was auctioned off by a Pennsylvania auction company.
